The desert land destination of present day Turkmenistan has had the privilege of being witness to some of the world’s best dynasties at their flourishing best. These include Alexander, the Parthian’s and the Seljuks. The harsh landscape seen during a trip to Turkmenistan with its difficult terrain has resulted in tourism being in its most undeveloped state. This makes the country to lose out on lot of foreign revenue. Most of the destinations which do manage to draw in travelers are located in the outer limits of the country. Since the country looses out on inadequate infrastructure to cater to its tourism needs therefore it manages to make up for the loss of its revenue here by exploiting the few oil and gas reserves located within its territory. The present day descendents of Turkmenistan are said to be the descendants of the tribes who visited this land somewhere during the 10th century from the countries located to the north east of Turkmenistan and there is predominant presence of Islam throughout the geographical limits of the country.

Official records tracing back the history of Turkmenistan provide the fact that in its early formative years this country was a part of the ancient kingdom of Persia. It was subsequently passed on to the Arab rulers who were subsequently succeeded by the Seljuk rulers. During later years it came under the control of Uzbekistan. The country of Turkmenistan finally found itself under the aegis of the Russians. This followed by years of opposition by the native Turks who finally managed to free the country from the clutches of the harsh Russians but not before 1990.

The best way to start a trip to Turkmenistan should ideally start with a visit to its capital city of Ashgabat which is situated on the periphery of the Kara Kum desert. There are several places and monuments worth visiting in the capital and the notable ones amongst them include a monument which has a revolving golden statue of the late president on the top, the Arc of Neutrality, the Palace of Turkmenbashi which is constructed out of white marble and has gold mirrored glass adding glamour to the already ornate palace. Turkmen rugs and carpets rank high on the bust buy’s list carried by the tourists who are on a visit to Turkmenistan. The best place to scout for these beautiful hand woven pieces of art is the Tolkuchka bazaar situated in the capital city of Ashgabat itself. The other important city located here in this country is that of Mary. Situated near to this city are the remains of the ancient city of Merv which had the honor of being regarded as the ‘Queen of Cities’ for the splendor it enveloped within itself. Located here in this country is also the mountain resort destination of Chuli. Also to Turkmenistan’s name are the ruins of another great city of its time Old Nisa which had the honor of being the capital city of the Parthian empire. The country is also known for its impressive breed of the studs known as Akhal-Teke. These horses can be seen at the Turkmenbashi Stud farm. An underground mineral lake located which is referred to as Kov Ata is situated in the town of Bakharden. Hot springs supply constant hot water into this lake which makes it very famous with tourists.

Even though most of the landscape in Turkmenistan is desert and arid but it still has in it treasures worth viewing by tourists. Dusty, hidden and difficult to reach adds the important mystic touch to Turkmenistan.
